An independent panel has been set up to consider a pay raise for B.C.'s MLAs, according to the Daily News. A proposal that was dropped in 2005 would have put MLAs' pay at 60% of what federal MPs like Betty Hinton make: $145,000 per year! Plus living and travel expenses.
Kamloops MLA Claude Richmond reminded readers: "A backbench MP makes more than the premier ... something is way out of whack."

What does this have to do with electing an effective MP?
Absolutely nothing, of course
Ugh I wrote a blog on this some time ago http://kamloopscity.com/blog/node/27 the first time the vote/recommendation came around but the point of my comment at the time was this (quoting myself):
“I am not pointing the finger at any one party, if you take some time and look around the salaries and allowances are different for each member and for each party. I mean lets look at it this way, if you make on average 80,000.00 a year (and this is good because allot of Canadians don’t make this much a year) your money is spent in several different ways.
So out of your salary would come a rent/mortgage payment, car loan or purchase of a car, expenses like food and other basic needs (basic I mean water, heat and hydro) and of course taxes. At the end of the year how much would you be left with?
So why is the life style of a politician more significant than yours? After all we did not ask the politician to run for office, they decided to do so themselves, which would imply to me they are willing to serve in a job they knowingly, accepted to be costly and understood its demands on a personal and financial level. I don’t understand why they can not pay for most of these things out of their own salary like all other Canadians. Instead they have a chance that most Canadians don’t; to invest their money because everything else is taken care of.”
It’s not so much about the pay as much as it is about the allowance (and should we mention the conservative view on welfare reform in Canada) and the demand for better health care coverage MLA’s and other politicians want to put this in place for themselves!
So this has everything to do with electing an EFFECTIVE MP, when I buy a car I want bang for my buck and want it to perform up to my expectations- those expectations being the ones I was sold on! Taking into account her past/current behaviours on the hill; absence in parliament, her lack of voting, her performance is not worth the raise!

Its a tough call. If you paid nothing, you'd only get rich people or homeless people running for office .
If you pay too much, you will get some people running for the wrong reasons. Any suggestions?
