The party we elected to represent us in the last election – that big blue machine of which Betty Hinton is a member – yesterday released three new TV spots (in Superbowl season, probably costing a couple hundred thousand each) that attack Liberal leader Stéphane Dion, using the oh-so-clever tactic of snatching clips from last year's Liberal leadership debates. Turns out today, according to the Toronto Star, those clips were probably used in violation of copyright law. The debates were covered by a "consortium of TV networks," administered by the Canadian Public Affairs Channel (CPAC), which controls the rights to the footage. And CPAC says it's "not aware of any request" to use the footage, plus "such video is traditionally never authorized for use by political parties." This is the party of ethics and accountability?

Not surprising at all. The continued lack of respect for the law by this government is almost limitless, from the Kingston Immigration Holding Center to this feeble attack on Dion. What next?

Not much...trying to link Betty Hinton to questionable actions of her party, especially when it is extremely unlikely she had anything to do with them, is crass.
An effective MP who can get the job done doesn't necessarily have to be a member of the party in office. Focus on the MP, not the party.

Considering this article was originally published by the by the Star, someone has deemed it new worthy, and unfortunately as a resident in Kamloops I can attest to the lack of reporting by our local paper. I think being informed of what our elected officials think, and feel, is very important. Is it possible that by not calling an election and taking out hate campaign adds against another leader- her party has left her open to criticism that she was not prepared for?
I tend to look at the whole picture when voting, not just the person, but the whole party. Eventually whom I vote for will stand in parliament and with the party - so for me they are both linked to being one and the same. If I simply looked at the individual I would fall short of voting at all – and that goes for all parties.
B. Hinton’s job takes her out of the kamloops location to parliament where she is to represent her constituents (as she so often affectionately calls us) and we must recognize the concerns Canadians have with the actions of the government in regards to party members who do not tow the line. So it would be very fair criticism, in my opinion, to say she might be incapable or has been, to form her own ideas and voicing them to her party, and she could very well be saying one think to the press here in town and another back in Ottawa- wouldn’t you want to know?
So you see these news articles here have everything to do with electing and MP for the riding, the press in kamloops is biased (as most are) so it is refreshing to get another perspective on the news and some reporting for a change!
